Someone in your life is silently struggling. Here’s what to do.

What do you do when someone you love is clearly struggling, but you don't know how to help (and you're secretly worried about making it worse)?

Most of us aren't ignoring hurting people because we don't care. We're just completely overwhelmed.

We don't want to say the wrong thing. We don't feel qualified. And honestly, we assume this is what pastors and professional counselors are for.

Except they can't keep up.

People are hurting at a scale we've never seen before. Anxiety, depression, trauma, loneliness, grief... it's everywhere. And there aren't nearly enough counselors to see everyone who needs help.

For perspective: 25 million people aren't getting help for severe anxiety alone. That's more than the entire population of Florida.

So what are we supposed to do?

Today on the podcast, I'm talking with bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn about how we, the church body, can step up and stand in the gap when those around us are hurting (and professional help isn't always an option).

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Why "just refer them to a counselor" isn't realistic for millions of people right now
  • What the average Christian can actually do that helps (even without training)
  • How to create relationships where people feel safe enough to open up
  • Why being vulnerable first often gives others permission to share
  • How to tell the difference between "I can listen and support" and "this needs professional help"
  • How the Church can become a real refuge again, one conversation at a time

You don't have to become a counselor. You don't have to have perfect words. You don't have to carry someone's entire life.

But you can be the person who checks in. Who listens. Who doesn't flinch when someone's hurting. This episode will show you where to start (in a way that actually helps, not harms).

Maybe you're watching someone you love spiral and you feel completely helpless. Maybe you're tired of not knowing what to say or when to step in.

Shaunti's book, When Hurting People Come to Church, will show you exactly what to do.

Not vague encouragement. Actual, practical guidance for how to help someone who's struggling without needing a counseling degree.

This is the book for anyone who's ever felt paralyzed watching someone suffer.
