Giving up meat on Fridays during Lent this year?

Even though I'm not Catholic, my husband's entire family is (including our 4 kids), so I still follow the Catholic Lent fasting rules with everyone else, even though I don't *have* to.

(Although, I'm not going to lie... I skipped out last year when I was pregnant, and I was NOT sad about it when I was craving - and eating - EVERYTHING.)

I'm sure I could skip out this year too. I'm nursing, so I'm exempt.

But fasting during Lent is honestly something I've grown to look forward to.

In this article I wrote for Busted Halo, I share why I participate each year, even though it's not always easy.

My reasoning was simple: I wanted to support my Catholic husband in his faith and set a good example for our children. Lent is pretty denomination-friendly, and I definitely didn’t want to have to stand before God some day and explain how dieting for months to look good in a bathing suit isn’t too much trouble but going without meat for a few Fridays is.

Yet, what started as a simple practice to support my family became so much more...

Turns out, Lent isn’t just about rules and routines. It’s not really about fasting, ashes, or giving up chocolate for a few weeks either.
The real purpose of Lent is to get rid of anything that would keep your heart far from God. It’s about purposeful remembering, preparing your heart for the miracle that is Easter, and making sure you have the soul space available for the work God wants to do in and through you.

And that's why I joyfully participate in Lent each year (even when it isn't easy).

If you're participating too, here are a few resources I think you'll find helpful!

In What Can Catholics Eat During Lent, I'm breaking down ALLLL the Catholic Lent rules in a way that's easy to understand and follow -- whether you're been Catholic your entire life, you're a recent convert, or you're just curious why Lenten fish fries are so popular this time of year.

This is a resource I WISH I had 10 years ago!!

I didn't... but now I'm sharing it with you.

But sometimes everyone needs a little variety.

Do you create Easter Baskets for your kids or grandkids each year? Personally, we do a mix in our family. Some years, we give the kids an empty basket to fill with candy we've scattered inside or outside (depending on the weather). Other years, we've put some of the bigger candy items (like chocolate bunnies) right inside the basket and let the kids go on an Easter egg hunt for the rest. Our children's grandparents will often give our children candy, bubbles, and/or small toys -- whether...

Can you believe Easter is right around the corner? I don't know about where you live, but the stores here are all fully stocked with ALLLL sorts of candy, eggs, baskets... all the Easter goodies that make an Easter morning egg hunt fun! (And I am 100% looking forward to some delicious Easter candy I'm already planning on my children sharing with me from their Easter baskets this year! #momtax) Yet, as fun as it is to do all of our favorite Easter traditions, Easter is just one of those...

It's crazy to think my littlest pumpkin is over 6 months old now! She crawls all over the place, pulls herself up to standing, LOVES peek-a-boo, and eats all sorts of healthy "people" food, like chicken, fish, mushrooms, spinach, yogurt, and apples. She's the cutest little bundle of joy, and we're all just absolutely smitten with her. 😍 Of course, the last six months have definitely been an adjustment... from being able to work all day while all my kids were in school to now taking care of a...
