Breaking news: They sued Meta and Youtube and WON!

Did you see the news? It was allll over my Instagram yesterday...

According to an article on NPR:

This past Wednesday, a California jury ruled that Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google (YouTube) knowingly designed their platforms to be addictive and that those design choices caused real harm to a real person.

It's the first verdict of its kind. And it's a BIG deal.

Not just for the family involved in this particular case, but because it sets a precedent and opens the door for further legal action and regulation in the future.

Last week, during the Rise Up Christian Parenting Conference, I heard the same statistics over and over and over again from our speakers: Our kids, tweens, and teens are seriously struggling with their mental health and social media is making it worse.

Now, obviously I'm not anti-social media or anti-business. I run a business that uses social media to reach more people (though not children). I do allow my kids to watch YouTube and my oldest to have Instagram, and I use these platforms myself.

BUT the lawsuit isn't over fair, friendly business or even the content on these platforms.

It's about technology companies who intentionally target young children (under 13) with a product that they know significantly harms them -- without disclosing the risk.

And yes, of course I believe in personal responsibility.

As a mom, it's MY job to monitor my kids' social media use, to monitor their mental health, and to teach them how to use social media responsibly. We talk about these topics a lot.

BUT I also believe in informed choice.

There's a reason children under 18 can't buy cigarettes and teens under 21 can't buy alcohol--and both have warning labels. Our food has nutrition information and allergy information. There are regulations around vitamins, supplements, medications, and personal care products. Even our *mattresses* have warning labels...

These laws exist for a reason. To help protect our society and ensure businesses play fair.

Until now, these tech companies have been able to freely sacrifice our kids for profit while convincing parents their products "are no big deal" -- even though they know the data strongly suggests otherwise.

So I, for one, am absolutely thrilled about this verdict and to see what happens next.

p.s. I never re-released conference sessions after the fact, but I'm going to publish my Rise Up Conference interview with Chris McKenna on the podcast next Wednesday.

The founder of Protect Young Eyes, he's a nationally respected authority on digital wellness and intentional technology use for children and teens. And he's been instrumental in helping pass legislation around kids and technology.

In our conversation, he shares some really eye-opening information and super practical tips for moms, and I definitely want you to hear it. It's SOOO good.

Stay tuned!
